silver gelatin print, black tea developer, metal chain

under my skin
2025

This work investigates my experience of living with chronic joint pain due to Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. Photo-sculptures combine photograms of different parts of my body with metal chains, representing the fragile nature of my body and the pain I experience.

Thin metal chains connect and restrict the prints physically, mirroring the control chronic pain has over me some days. Restriction is a prominent theme in this work, as there are many days where I feel trapped in my own body as a result of pain.

The metal chains are twisted and knotted. They connect and separate. They are made from a strong material, but the chains themselves are small and fragile.

Emotions I feel as a result of my hEDS are debossed into prints of my body. By embedding words in the prints, they cannot be removed and change the print, reflecting the genetic nature of this condition.
